From Vinyl to AI: Dr. Portia Sabin Shares Career Tips for Independent Artists

In this episode of BESPOKEN, host Scott Pollack catches up with Dr. Portia Sabin, President of the Music Business Association and former president of the groundbreaking indie label Kill Rock Stars. Dr. Sabin, who also hosts “The Future of What” podcast, shares essential music industry tips for independent artists and labels. The conversation includes the collection of music royalties, performing rights organizations (PROs), and income from digital streaming—essential knowledge for artists who want to grow and protect their income streams. Dr. Sabin discusses the enduring popularity of physical media like vinyl records and CDs in a more digital era, highlighting how K-Pop has attracted younger listeners back to record stores. Watch the episode for key tips to succeed in today’s competitive landscape.

Artist Empowerment: Bridging Creativity and Business Sense

Sabin stresses that artists often romanticize “overnight success” but skip over learning the music business basics. One of her initiatives at the Music Business Association is their Roadshows. In addition to their Music Biz Conference, these roving events offer education and support for artists, teaching the essentials of Performing Rights Organizations (PROS, e.g., ASCAP, BMI, SESAC) and royalty collection. Essential knowledge for artists who want to grow and protect their income streams.

"If you are not interested in collecting your royalties, I promise you there is someone out there who is."

Physical Media’s Enduring Staying Power

Despite streaming dominance, vinyl records, CDs, and cassettes thrive. As artists build their fan base, it’s noted that physical media is a powerful tool for converting casual fans into super fans. Sabin notes the recent book of K-Pop fans buying records for collectibility, proving physical media bridges fan-artist connections.

“Artists always want physical, no matter what...They want to be able to hold what they produced...It's very important...physical is still a huge part of the equation.”

Globalization, Diversity, and Optimism—A Trifecta for Success

Globalization, diversity, and optimism are reshaping the music industry, as Sabin highlights. Artists like Bad Bunny and K-Pop acts now dominate globally, proving language and borders no longer limit success—a stark shift from past decades. This expansion demands cultural collaboration, mirrored in Music Biz’s international Roadshows and diverse leadership (their board is now majority women and people of color). Despite challenges like AI and fraud, Sabin sees hope in collective progress: “A rising tide lifts all boats.” The industry’s future hinges on embracing this interconnected, inclusive mindset—where diversity isn’t just fair but profitable. With these tips and an optimistic mindset, independent musicians can grow their careers.
